In recent years, medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have gained massive popularity on social media and in the medical world. Marketed as fast and effective solutions for weight loss, they’ve created a lot of buzz — but are they really the magic fix they seem to be?
As a nutritionist, I’m here to help you understand what these medications are, how they work, and why a supportive nutrition plan is still essential, even when medications are part of your journey.
What are these medications?
These are part of a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists. GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone naturally produced in your gut when you eat.
GLP-1 plays a big role in:
🧠 Sending fullness signals to the brain
🍽️ Helping you feel satisfied after meals
💉 Stimulating insulin production and improving blood sugar control
In people living with obesity, studies have shown that GLP-1 production may be reduced, or the body may become resistant to its effects. This is why GLP-1 medications are often used to help support appetite regulation and metabolic function — especially in clinical obesity.
But here’s the truth: they’re not magic
While GLP-1 medications can be helpful, they come with some important considerations:
❗️They were originally developed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss
⚠️ They can have side effects like nausea, constipation, diarrhea, mood changes, and even pancreatitis in rare cases
📉 And perhaps most importantly: 53% to 58.2% of lost weight is often regained within one year after stopping the medication
This is why food, habits, and mindset matter so much.
Where does nutrition come in?
If you're taking these medications — or considering them — nutrition can make a huge difference in your experience and your results.
As a nutritionist, I help you:
✅ Manage side effects like nausea and digestive discomfort
✅ Ensure you’re getting enough protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals
✅ Build habits that last beyond the medication
✅ Reconnect with food in a way that feels peaceful, joyful, and sustainable
In summary:
GLP-1 medications can be a helpful tool — especially when prescribed for clinical obesity. But they’re not a long-term solution by themselves.
Lasting change comes from the daily choices you make, your relationship with food, and the support you have along the way.
If you’re currently using one of these medications, or thinking about it, and want personalized nutrition support that respects your story and goals — I’m here for you.
